Hollywood's Top-Earning On-Screen Couples

Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler

$2.9 billion

The Lord of the Rings trilogy centers on Frodo's quest to destroy the dangerous Ring. But the romance between Mortensen's Aragorn and Tyler's Arwen is the grown up romantic heart of the movie. Arwen's choice between immortality and love moved many female moviegoers and helped the trilogy earn $2.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst

$2.5 billion

While fan-boys flocked to see Spider-Man go up against their favorite villains, many other viewers tuned in for the love triangle between Peter Parker, Mary Jane and Parker's best friend, Harry. The on-screen chemistry helped Spider-Man become one of the most successful franchises of all time. Now Sony is rebooting the story with a new director and a new cast.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet

$1.9 billion

This on-screen couple makes our list mostly thanks to Titanic, which raked in $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. But they also appeared together in 2008's Revolutionary Road as another doomed couple. This time the action took place in the stifling suburbs instead of on a boat, but the relationship ended just as tragically.

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox

$1.5 billion

The real stars of the Transformers films are arguably the giant robots. But for viewers who needed some humans to hang onto, LaBeouf and Fox provided just the right kind of light-hearted chemistry to keep the film relatable. A third film is reportedly in the works for a July 2011 release date.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

$1.1 billion

Romance movies always seem to work best when there is a huge obstacle keeping the couple apart. Few obstacles are bigger than the one separating Bella and Edward in the Twilight films: Namely that he's a vampire. The first two movies of the series have grossed $1.1 billion at the box office. The third installment, Eclipse, hits theaters at the end of June.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts

$847 million

Much of the sparkly charm of the Ocean's movies comes from the relaxed chemistry between big stars like George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt. In the first two films Julia Roberts kept up with the boys as Tess, the object of Danny Ocean's affection. She helped the two films earn a total $847 million at the worldwide box office.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts

$770 million

Roberts makes a second appearance on our list thanks to her work with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride. Roberts and Gere somehow managed to make the prostitute/John relationship look only a little creepy in Pretty Woman. The film earned $463 million at the worldwide box office.

Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler

$590 million

Liv Tyler is best known for her indie work but she makes it on our list for a second time thanks to her other big-budget hit: Armageddon. She starred in the movie opposite Ben Affleck and their chemistry helped the film earn $534 million. The couple's second on-screen pairing, Jersey Girl, was less successful earning only $36 million.

Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger

$545 million

As Bridget Jones, Renee Zellweger was the ultimate everywoman hero who ate a bit too much, drank a bit too much and seemed always unlucky in love. So it's no wonder that millions of women fell for Colin Firth's Mark Darcy. The couple revised their roles three years after the original film in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan

$519 million

For a while there in the '80s, Hanks and Ryan were the modern day Hepburn and Grant. They are the only couple on our list to appear in three movies together that were not sequels. Of the three 1998's You've Got Mail is the highest grossing with $250 million at the worldwide box office.
